Welcome to the Wikispace for the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics program The Galaxy-Halo Connection Across Cosmic Time
Apr 24, 2017 - Jul 14, 2017 Coordinators: Alexie Leauthaud, Risa Wechsler, and Andrew Zentner Scientific Advisors: Carlos Frenk, Marla Geha, Andrey Kravtsov, Romain Teyssier, and Martin White
Program
This program aims to bring together experts in the statistics of the galaxy-halo connection, cosmologists, survey scientists, and observers and theorists working on galaxy evolution to foster discussions about observational probes of the galaxy-dark matter connection and to spur on the development of next-generation theoretical methods. To brainstorm and generate ideas, we will also hold a conference on the galaxy-halo connection and its role in the science of large cosmological surveys on May 15-19, 2017.
Workshop Organization and Schedule
The KITP weekly schedule can be found here: Schedule
The philosophy of this workshop is to avoid over scheduling and to provide opportunities to have informal discussions, impromptu presentations, explore new ideas, and get real work done. In accord with this philosophy, our weekly schedule will have the following format.
Monday at 2pm. Main seminar room. Organizational meeting. Welcome new participants. Discussion of topics to be covered in the general discussion
Tuesday at 2pm. Auditorium. Moderated discussion. One topic with 2 or more discussion leaders.
Wednesday at 2pm. Auditorium. Occasional Longer format talk
Thursday at 2pm. Auditorium. Archive discussion.
Friday at 2pm. Three informal short talks. 10-minute + 10-minute questions. The goal of these talks will be to start or complement the running discussions during the workshop. One can sign up for an informal talk early in the same week. The goal of these talks will be to show work in progress and/or new ideas that have come up during the workshop. Talks about half-baked ideas are strongly encouraged! These talks can be blackboard/slides/interpretive dance/or you can also simply print out a figure to pass around.
Other activities: May 25th: wine and cheese
For BBQs at the residence: All we ask is that you load the dishwashers and take the trash and recycling to the dumpsters after the party. Also just leave the spaces clean. Please feel free to use the prep kitchen for group dinners and entertaining. However, we ask that you take remaining perishables (including alcohol) back to your own unit so that the space is ready for the next user. The freezers and fridges are emptied daily. Should you need to advance purchase and store items in the fridges in the prep-area, just write a note saying, for example, "For Friday's event" so that our custodial staff understand.
Conference May 15th - May 19th
There will be a conference associated with the workshop, the schedule of the conference is still being put together.
Workshop Participation
Your can find who will be attending the workshop here: http://online.kitp.ucsb.edu/online/galhalo17/directory.html Note that this list only includes workshop participants. During the week of Conference, there will be a larger number of people that are not listed above.
We hope you have arranged your travel and accommodation! If you need further information about travel and accommodation, please email James for more information (james@kitp.ucsb.edu)
